What is Peg Tube Feeding and Why It’s Done

Tube feeding, also called enteral nutrition, is a way food can get into the body if a person is unable to eat via the mouth or the food intake is too low. Enteral food comes in liquid form and is given through a tube that goes into the stomach or small intestine.

A patient is prescribed enteral nutrition, or tube feeding if he can’t eat enough to get the nutrients his body needs. A doctor may recommend tube feeding for the following reasons:
  • Cancer disease and/or cancer treatment
  • Medical conditions that make swallowing hard or painful
  • Brain and spinal cord problems such as stroke or ALS
  • Digestive tract issues and damages

Types of Feeding Tubes

Feeding tubes deliver liquid nutrients directly to the stomach or small intestine. Options include:

Tube feeding Through the Nose

If you need short-term enteral feeding like for a month or less, your doctor may recommend inserting a tube through the nose and into the stomach (Naso Gastric Tube) or the small intestine (Naso-Jejunal tube).

Through the skin on your abdomen

If you’ll need longer-term tube feeding, your doctor may recommend a procedure to place a tube through the skin on your abdomen and into your stomach (gastrostomy) or into your small intestine (jejunostomy).

How are tube feeds given?

Tube feeding can be given in 3 different ways:

Using a Pump

A pump is used for continuous or intermittent feeds where the formula is given without stopping for 24 hours or as prescribed by the Doctor.

Using Gravity Drip

A gravity drip is used to give larger amounts of formula over a shorter period of time usually 4 to 6 times Daily.

Using a Syringe

Feeding using a syringe is the fastest method where larger amounts of the formula are given at a time. it is usually given 3 to 4 times daily.

What should I do if the tube has been displaced?

In case you suspect tube displacement call us or any trained nurse to assess the situation in person. Do not attempt to re-insert the feeding tube on your own!

Can I have a feeding tube at home?

Yes, you can. In fact, most tube feedings are done at home as they might stay with you for a long time. Doctors usually recommend having home nursing care for tube feeding as it’s not recommended to stay in the hospital to do so.

What are the risks of tube feeding?

There are no life-threatening risks for home tube feeding, but complications can occur. These complications may include:

  • Clogged, damaged, or displaced tube
  • Infection at the insertion site
  • Gastrointestinal problems including  nausea, diarrhea, and constipation
  • Pain at the tube insertion site
  • Visible Leaking of stomach contents at the tube site
Is Tube feeding covered by Insurances?

Unfortunately, it isn’t! Tube feeding is not covered by insurance unless the patient has other health conditions that are covered and accepted.
